Madison, MS - B. G. Garrison passed away peacefully in his beloved home on the hill in Madison, MS, on January 3, 2013. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Peggy Jean Harris Garrison; sons, Glen Garrison (Karen) of Destrehan, LA, Don Garrison (Felicia) of Ridgeland, MS; daughter, Kathy Scott (Russ) of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Keri Chatham (Ellis), Lacy Sharpe (Durden), Nick Garrison, Phillip Garrison, Lauren Garrison, Will Scott, Lilly Scott; great-grandchildren, Phillip Sharpe, Grace Sharpe, Karlee Chatham; sisters, Geraldine Garner and Barbara Nell Garrison, both of Ripley, and Anne Roberts of New Albany; He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Odell Reaves Garrison; brothers, Lewis, Dennis, and Billy Mack Garrison; one sister, Oretha Thurmond.

He was born in Tippah County, MS. in the Buena Vista Community outside Ripley. He graduated from Delta State University and received a Masters Degree form the University of Michigan in Public Health Education. Mr. Garrison worked for the Mississippi Lung (Tuberculosis) Association for many years where he devoted his life to educating children in the state of Mississippi regarding the hazards of smoking. He retired from the MS State Board of Health in 1987. He enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII and served as a medical corpsman with the 5th Marine Division and was decorated for bravery with the Silver Star at the Battle of Iwo Jima."By his fealess initiative and cool courage, he contributed to the saving of many lives and his unselfish devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." quote from the Secretary of the Navy, Washington, D.C., for the President of the United States. He lived his 90 years in the service of others. There will never be another man like B.G. Garrison. His memory will forever go on in the multitude of stories told by the people that loved him. B.G.'s faith, family, and friends were his life. He was a life long gardener, sportsman, and coach. He loved the outdoors and raising dogs, birds, bees, and livestock.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you honor B.G. with giving to the charity of your choice.

Vistation will be 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, Monday, January 7, 2013 at Ripley Funeral Home.

Services will be at 1:00 pm, Monday, January 7, 2013 at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bill Baker officiating. Burial will be in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery. To view obituaries on-line and sign guest book, visit
