John Albert Casner, 73, resident of the Walnut Community and retired general contractor, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes Thursday morning January 25, 2018 at The Tippah County Hospital.
Funeral Services, with Military Honors, for Mr. Casner will be at 2 PM Tuesday January 30 at The Charity Church at Chalybeate where he was a member. Bro. Tim Watson, pastor of the church will officiate assisted by Bro. Brad Watson. Burial will follow in the Charity Cemetery. Arrangements will be provided by The Ripley Funeral Home.
A native of Illinois, Mr. Casner was born January 30, 1944 to the late Albert Raycel and Frances Sprinkel Casner. He received his education in the DeKalb County Illinois Public School System and for much of his life was a self employed masonry contractor with projects throughout the United States. He was married February 17, 2008 to the former Dora Gossett, known by many as the "The Cookie Lady", of Tippah County who survives.
A Christian and an avid outdoorsman who was known by many as "Popa John", Mr. Casner had many interests that included fishing, attending wrestling events, grilling, gardening, raising chickens, flea markets and yard sales. In past years, he and his friend, Grady Watson, were frequent visitors to area wrestling matches. His pleasant personality permitted him to tease his friends and surprise them with unexpected "Happy" gifts never expecting anything in return.
Visitation for Mr. Casner will continue Tuesday two hours before service time at Charity Church.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Casner leaves his children, Kristine Jones (Thomas Klindt) of Pine Tops, NC, Tiffany Casner of Lubbock, TX, Tracy Casner and Travis Casner, both of Durham, NC, Mary Tull (Nathan), of Georgia , Rebecca Riley of Tupelo and John Casner (Donna) of Walnut, three sisters, Margaret Casner, Donna Johnson and Susie Holstine, three brothers, Jim, Ronnie and Donald Casner, twenty-one grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Anthony Riley and David Rust, a brother, Tom Casner and a granddaughter.
