Neva Lynn Shappley, 91, longtime resident of the Palmer Community in Ripley and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, departed this life on Saturday April 14, 2018 at The Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS.
Funeral Services celebrating the wonderful life of Mrs. Shappley will be at 12 Noon Thursday April 19 in The Heritage Chapel of Ripley Funeral Home. The officiating minister will be Josh McCrary of Ripley. Burial will follow at The Tippah Memorial Gardens in Ripley. A visitation for family and friends will be at The Ripley Funeral Home one hour before services.
Born October 14, 1926 in Tiplersville, she was the second of three children born to the late William Burkitt and Eunice Wilbanks Hopper. Mrs. Shappley was a graduate of Chalybeate High School and continued her education at Northwest Community College in Senatobia where she completed her Associate Degree in Elementary Education. She married her high school sweetheart, James Ray Shappley, a WW II Naval Veteran who preceded her in death on February 14, 1991.
Mr. and Mrs. Shappley moved to Memphis in 1956 where she often worked alongside her husband in the family business, Shappley & Son Grocery. A homemaker throughout her life, her primary joy was caring for her two children. After retirement, they returned to their farm in Ripley.
A faithful member of Ripley Church of Christ, Mrs. Shappley was a charter member of the Golden Seniors of Ripley. She enjoyed the group activities of aerobics, square dancing and group travel outings. She also competed and medaled in the Senior Olympics.
Mrs. Shappley led a life of example. A wonderful and loving wife and mother, she taught her family to be generous, to value everyone as children of God, to be faithful followers of Christ, to value family relationships and she demonstrated how to cope with adversity and pain with grace and courage. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children Deborah Feldman (Dr. Sandy Feldman) of Madison, MS and Ben R. Shappley (Stacie Ambrose) of Germantown, TN, a brother, Burkitt Ray Hopper (Jamie), granddaughter, Rachel Newman (J.T.), a step-grandson, Jeff Feldman (Alicia), great grandchildren, Max and Owen Newman, step great grandchildren , Sophie and Mia Feldman, sisters in law, Ruth Akin and Bobby Clement (George) and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ilene Smith, sister in law, Patty Sue Scott and brothers in law Elmo Akin, Elmo Smith and Clyde Scott.
The family of Neva Lynn Shappley is grateful to all her family, friends and loved ones who gave her abundant joy throughout her life's journey. The family request that memorials be directed to Ripley Church of Christ, 1300 Hall Dr., Ripley, Ms 38663 or to a charity of the donors choice.
