Vance Dale Derrick, 80, well known resident of the Ashland Community and retired law enforcement officer, passed away Wednesday evening December 5, 2018 at the Ashland Health & Rehabilitation Center in Benton County following an extended illness.
  Funeral Services honoring the life of Mr. Derrick will be at 11 AM Tuesday December 11 at Ashland Baptist Church where he was a member with the church minister, Bro. Gerald Hodge, officiating. Burial, with recognition provided by The Mississippi Law Enforcement Honor Guard, will follow in Ashland Cemetery. Arrangements will be provided by The Ripley Funeral Home.
  Born in Tippah County on May 17, 1938, Mr. Derrick was the son of the late Rubye Garrett Mauney and the late Ransom Mauney. He moved with his family to Benton County at an early age and was a resident of the Ashland area for the remainder of his life. Mr. Derrick was a 1957 graduate of Ashland High School and was married on December 24, 1957 to his beloved wife, the former Bonnie Roberson, who served as office manager for the Mississippi State Board of Health before her retirement.
  An active member of his community, Mr. Derrick participated in worthwhile activities for the betterment of Benton County and the state of Mississippi. He was employed for 33 years as a law enforcement officer for the Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks before his retirement fifteen years ago.
  An avid outdoorsman who was a "cowboy at heart", Mr. Derrick enjoyed many events that benefited his community and surrounding areas that included cooking fish for area events and charities, trail rides and participating in field trials at Grand Junction, TN. His "larger than life" personality endeared him to many in his beloved state and county. Singing, coon hunting and grappling were other pleasures that he enjoyed as long as health permitted.
  Mr. Derrick was a much respected man of wisdom as he lived out his love for God by serving others and loving them well. He was an honorable man who will be missed by many.
  Visitation for Mr. Derrick will be from 5 PM to 8 PM Monday December 10 at The Ripley Funeral Home and will continue Tuesday from 9 AM to 11 AM at Ashland Baptist Church.
  In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by a daughter, Bonnie "Penny" Campbell (Clay) of Ashland, a son James Derrick (Charlotte) of Saltillo, two sisters, Jamie Akin (Kenneth) of Olive Branch and Rannie Butler (Dave) of Southaven, one brother J.C. Derrick (Jo) of Murfreesboro, TN, four grandchildren, Derrick Campbell (Kristy), Cooper Campbell, Cameron Derrick (Linn) and Jamie Hanskiewicz (Shane), three great grandchildren, Joni Lynn Campbell, Eliah and Naima Derrick a sister in law, Maynon Mauney and many friends.
  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Mauney and many dear friends.
