Atawal Ayers Rowland Obituary

“Polly” as she liked to be called is flying with the angels and singing “Don’t Fence Me In” her favorite song. She was born on a farm in Tippah County in 1925 to Alpha and Zeva Ayers. She told us she had a happy childhood playing with her younger brother, Freeman. She had two older sisters, Lucille and Mildred. One time I (Connie) asked her how they got through the depression. She said, heck, we didn’t know there was one. We didn’t have anything before, during or after. But we always had plenty to eat because we grew it right there. She met George Franklin Rowland as a teenager and they dated until he joined the Air Force in WW II. While he was away she moved to Memphis to work. She had fun dancing at night at the Peabody Hotel with the Service men and sharing an apartment with her girlfriends. When Frank came home they were married and their life began. Lots of Life. Ninety three years of life. They had three children, Jerry,Connie and Brenda. She had Joy,grand babies, sorrow, loss, a career as a beautician, great grand babies, and great great grand babies. Everything that comes with a long life. She endured, and if she loved you, it was a wonderful gift. Her smile lit up our hearts. She took care of so many and we were so happy to be able to take care of her and show her our appreciation and love. She loved us unconditionally and she will be forever in our hearts. We are rejoicing, knowing she is released from a body that was holding her back. She lived her life with integrity. We will miss her voice and her sweet smile. Fly home sweet Mom. God speed
