Charlie Fagin Yancey Obituary

Charlie Fagin Yancey, 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 24, 2024, at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by loved ones. He was a member of Christ Covenant Church in Oakland, TN.

Funeral Services honoring Mr. Yancey’s life will be at 11:00a.m., Thursday, March 7, 2024, in the Heritage Chapel of the Ripley Funeral Home with Dr. Ben Taylor officiating.  Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. before the Service. Burial will follow at the Ripley City Cemetery.

At the age of 15, he got his Barber License and was working as a Barber in the 1940’s.  From 1951 to 1953, he was in the United States Air Force as a Medic and Dental Assistant.  Afterwards he went to Mississippi State University and Ole Miss to learn his trade as a Chemist, which he holds six Patents in the US Patent Office.  For several years, he was a realtor and taught classes for incoming students joining the Real Estate career. He worked for Ethyl Corporation for 15 years in Baton Rouge, LA and at Barrow-Agee & Woodson-Tennent Laboratories in Memphis, TN. He retired in 1998 from Alpha Owens Corning in Piperton,TN.

Fagin as he was known by his siblings and those from his early years; Dad or Buddy as affectionately called by his immediate family.  He was a Christian man who loved his books and reading as well as studying theology and collecting southern artprints.  He enjoyed a good pen and loved keeping notes from to-do lists to science-related ideas.

Buddy always had a good story, especially from the good old days, that would make you smile and laugh.  His memory into his 90’s was clear and sharp; he could tell stories with great details.  He could tell the family history and connect the younger generations to those that came before.  He always seemed to remember back to the people in his younger days with honor and respect.  Buddy was a connection between the old ways and modern America, even seen in the collections of old newspapers, coins and written notes that he kept for decades.  As a member of the Greatest Generation, he was a national and family treasure.  His wisdom, smile, soft nature, and love for life will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.  93 years is a great run and a life well lived.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Celesta Yancey, of 47 years and his second wife, Freeda Browder, of 19 years, by his parents, Charlie and Overa Leola Yancey, three sisters, Elsie Mae Huddleston, Leola Yancey and Dolly Murphy, and one brother, Jim Yancey.

Those left to cherish his memory include sons Greg Yancey (Debbie) of GA, Doug Yancey (Cathy) of TN and daughter Carolyn Barnett (Eric) of TN, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother Willie Yancey of Memphis and sister Marilyn Harrell (Benny) of Falkner.
