Jimmy Wayne Palmer, 83, resident of Hernando, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, February 11, 2021 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Desoto County following an extended illness.
Funeral Services honoring the life of Mr. Palmer will be at 1 PM Monday, February 22 at Golden Hill Church near Ripley With Bro. Mark Luther officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Arrangements will be provided by The Ripley Funeral Home.
Mr. Palmer was born April 10, 1937 in Bexer, AL, the son of the late William Russell and Gladys Stockton Palmer. He moved with his family to Memphis in the 1950's and was a graduate of Southside High School. After graduation, Mr. Palmer continued his education at Shelby State Community College, University of Memphis and University of Tennessee. He proudly served as a sharpshooter in the United States Marine Reserves and was married June 30, 1961 to his beloved wife, the former Betty Jean Givens, who survives.
Mr. Palmer was employed as a graphic artist with companies that included the Ferguson Company and Sam Shainberg Company in Memphis and Troxell Company in Moscow, TN before his retirement.
A man of faith and member of the Living Word Lutheran Church in Memphis, Mr. Palmer served as Sunday School teacher, worked on the Evangelism committee and was a youth sponsor on ministry camping trips to Lutheridge, SC.
A man of various talents, Mr. Palmer will be remembered as a skilled craftsman and artist. He "dabbled" in all areas of art that included, charcoal, sculpting, fine art and pastel drawings. He also enjoyed etching, leatherwork and resin. Reading novels and an avid music lover, he was fond of singing and playing the piano.
Mr. Palmer loved his home in Memphis and loved to share his vast knowledge of music, crafts and art with his family and friends. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, he will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visitation will be Monday, February 22 from 11 AM to 1 PM at Golden Hill Church.
In Addition to his wife of 59 years, those left to share his memories include his children, Tiffanie Downing (Dale) of Olympia, WA and Jeffry Palmer (Julia) of Tempe, AZ, one brother, Jack Palmer of Moore, OK and three granddaughters, Jessi Downing, Naomi Palmer and Yonit Upart.
