Richard Eugene Hurt, 80, resident of Walnut, MS, passed away Monday, June 11, 2018, at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth following a brief illness.
Born August 6, 1937, in Benton County, MS, he was the son of the late George Allen and Genia Almedia Work Hurt. Mr. Hurt was a graduate of Ashland High School and was a valued employee of Central Distributors in Jackson, TN, for over 50 years before his retirement. He was married to his beloved wife, the former Joyce Wakefield Lowrance, who preceded him in death June 30, 2008.
Mr. Hurt had been a resident of Walnut for the last eight years where he enjoyed being close to his sisters and other family members. He will be remembered for the love of his church, Jesus Name Community Church, where he could be often found greeting church members and guests each week. Volunteering at the church thrift store and coffee shop were pastime favorites he enjoyed.
Visitation will be Friday, June 15, from 5 PM to 9PM and will continue Saturday from 9 AM to 11 AM at Jesus Name Community Church near Walnut. Funeral Services honoring his life will be at 11 AM Saturday, June 16, at the Jesus Name Community Church with his pastor, Bro. Gary Porterfield officiating. Personal reflections will be given by Bro. Cory Porterfield. Graveside services will follow at 3 PM Saturday, at The Ridgecrest Cemetery in Jackson, TN, with Bro. Cliff Walker officiating. Arrangements will be provided by The Ripley Funeral Home.
Mr. Hurt is survived by two sons, Billy Gene Hurt and Jack Lowrance (Carol) both of Jackson, TN; a sister, Polly Wilbanks (Billy Clyde) of Walnut; two grandchildren, Macy Hurt and Leslie McCurdy of Jackson, TN; two great grandchildren Ella Kate and Knox McCurdy; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also recently preceded in death by a sister, Ramona Smith.
Pallbearers will be Rodney Rose, Thomas Rose, Gaither Barnes, Kerry Hodge, Willy Fowler, and Monroe Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Mr. Hurt's Sunday School Class.
