Ruby Leatha Mohundro Stewart

Ruby Leatha Mohundro Stewart, 96, passed away peacefully at her home on July 12, 2026.

Born on February 8, 1930, in Pocahontas, Tennessee, Ruby was the daughter of the late George Gordon Mohundro and Mary Addalaide Null. She married the love of her life, Newton Marvin Stewart, and together they built a large and loving family.

Ruby worked at PEP Industries and later at Alcorn County Care Inn. She was a faithful member of County Line Baptist Church in Walnut, Mississippi.

Known affectionately by many as "Leether," Ruby never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone who walked through her door feel like family. Her home was always full of life, laughter, and the smell of a homemade breakfast. Every morning she could be found in the kitchen preparing homemade biscuits and a hearty country breakfast, and there was always an open invitation for anyone who wanted to pull up a chair and eat.

She was the true "mother hen" of her family, not only raising her own children but helping raise countless grandchildren and other children throughout the years. She loved deeply, cared generously, and always made sure those around her were fed, cared for, and knew they were loved.

Ruby enjoyed tending to her chickens, which freely roamed her yard and became part of countless treasured family memories. The yard was always alive with children playing, laughter echoing through the air, and stories that would be shared for generations. She also loved country and gospel music, especially the songs of George Jones. Family and friends will forever remember seeing Ruby with her ever-present chewing tobacco—it simply wouldn't have been "Leether" without it.

She was welcomed into Heaven by her beloved husband, Newton Marvin Stewart; two children, Paul Stewart and Regina Stewart; one granddaughter, Jessica Vinson; one great-grandson, Luke Bryan Porterfield; six siblings, William Carl Mohundro, Mark Louis Mohundro, Minnie Lou Jones, Mattie Sue Mohundro, and an unborn set of twins.

She leaves behind eight loving children: Jimmy Stewart (Peggy), Kathy Rogers (William), Marsh Stewart (Joyce), Stella Vinson (Frankie), Jackie Stewart (Darlene), Joey Stewart (Becky), Lisa Porterfield (Clifford), and Bobby Stewart; one sister, Carlie Jewel Wood; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family members; and many dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, and again from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Heritage Chapel of Ripley Funeral Home.

Funeral services honoring Ruby's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, in the Heritage Chapel of Ripley Funeral Home with Bro. Gary Porterfield and Bro. Dock Dollar officiating.

Interment will follow at County Line Baptist Church Cemetery in Walnut, Mississippi. There will be no graveside service.
