Shirley Ann South Carter, 80, Shirley Ann South Carter, 80, resident of Memphis, native Tippah Countian and devoted wife of the late Curtis Dale Carter who died December 13, 2015, passed away Thursday evening September 8, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.
   Funeral Services for Mrs. Carter will be at 1 PM Tuesday September 13 at Whittentown Baptist Church near Ripley where her family had worshiped for years. Burial will be in the church cemetery with arrangements provided by The Ripley Funeral Home.
  Born June 10, 1936 in Tippah County, she was the daughter of the late Terry Vance South, Sr. and Velma McCown South. Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Shady Grove High School in Tippah County and moved to Memphis with her husband in 1957. For many years, she was involved in many religious, civic and political activities of her community. She was a manager for the Children's Clothing Department for Sears on Poplar for 22 years before her retirement. Mrs. Carter was a long time member of Leaclair Baptist Church and a much loved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister.
  She will be remembered for her love of flower and vegetable gardening and her family often commented that she was "the world's best cook - next to her mother". For many years she coached basketball, softball and bowling programs sponsored by her church. Mr. and Mrs. Carter enjoyed the many friendships with their bowling league that they were members of in past years. An avid follower of politics, Mrs. Carter was involved in the political process of the Memphis Electorial System that included serving in numerous positions of responsibility at the Macon Elementary School Voting Precinct.
  Visitation will be from 11 AM to 1 PM Tuesday at Whittentown Baptist Church.
  She leaves her children, Stephanie Lowery and Joey (Lisa) Carter both of Memphis, her sister, Dr. Dwalia South (Roger Yancey) of Ripley, 4 grandchildren, Brad (Martha), Zach (April ) Lowery and Teri (Curtis) Gibson and Amber Davis (Amber Shinall) and 8 greatgrandchildren, Dallas, Landon, Witten and Berlyn Lowery, Joshlyn, Cheyenne, Chase Gibson and Chelsey Shinall.
  The Family request that Memorials be directed to Whittentown Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Sandra Benefield, 1031 CR 435, Ripley, MS 38663.
  Those honored to serve as pallbearers include Brad, Zach and David Lowery, Jesse and Jack
  Williams and Eddie Trumble, Sr. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Oswald, Lymon Stewart, Roger Yancey and Tommy Carter Smith.
